How Often Should a Heat Pump Be Serviced?

Plan on a professional service once a year, ideally before winter. MCS recommends a yearly check-up, and some manufacturers make annual servicing a condition of their guarantee. Vaillant, for example, states that its heat pump guarantee becomes invalid if the heat pump has not been serviced annually.

Daikin UK puts a typical professional service at £150 to £300, depending on the system and local labour rates. Between services, the main homeowner job is keeping the outdoor unit clear of leaves, plants and debris.

Once a year

An annual service before the heating season is the usual recommendation, and often a warranty condition.

£150–£300

Daikin UK’s typical range for a professional service. Your quote depends on the make, the system and where you live.

Up to 20 years

MCS says an air source heat pump lasts up to 20 years on average. Good design and regular servicing help it get there.

What Happens During a Heat Pump Service?

The exact checklist depends on the make and model, so ask the engineer which manufacturer procedure they follow. Daikin UK describes a service as including:

Inspection and testing

  • A visual inspection of the major components
  • Pressure testing of the refrigerant circuit to detect leaks
  • Running the system to check it operates correctly

Cleaning and reporting

  • Cleaning the outdoor coil, indoor heat exchanger and filters
  • Restoring good heat transfer and airflow
  • A written service report for your records

It is also worth asking the engineer to check your controls while they are there. A heat pump that is mechanically sound can still run expensively if the flow temperature or weather compensation is set badly. Our heat pump temperature settings guide explains what to look for.

Keep every service report. If you ever need to make a warranty claim, you may be asked to show that the heat pump was serviced as the manufacturer required.

How Much Does a Heat Pump Service Cost?

There is no fixed UK price. These are current published examples, checked on 14 October 2026:

Option Published price What it covers
Typical one-off service (Daikin UK guidance) £150–£300 A single annual service. Price depends on system complexity and regional labour rates.
Octopus annual service (Standard Cover) £275 including VAT An annual service for heat pumps Octopus installed, paid for separately.
Octopus Cosy Care plan £12 a month (£144 a year) Monitoring, an optional annual health check, priority support and an extended workmanship warranty. Only for heat pumps Octopus installed.

Many installers also offer their own service plans. Before signing up, check whether the plan includes the annual service itself, call-out charges and parts, or only some of these.

Servicing and Your Heat Pump Warranty

Heat pump guarantees often come with conditions, and missing them can shorten or cancel your cover. Vaillant’s published heat pump guarantee terms are a good example of what to look for:

Register on time

Vaillant asks for the heat pump to be registered within 30 days of installation. If it is not, cover drops to 12 months from installation.

Service every year

The heat pump must be serviced annually by Vaillant or another suitably competent engineer, or the guarantee becomes invalid.

Service costs are yours

The cost of the annual service is not covered by the guarantee itself.

Other manufacturers set their own terms, and these change over time. Find your guarantee certificate or the manufacturer’s current terms, and check three things: the registration deadline, the servicing interval, and who is allowed to carry out the service.

What You Can Safely Do Yourself

Do

  • Keep the outdoor unit clear of leaves, snow and debris. Daikin recommends at least 300mm of clear space around it.
  • Cut back plants growing near the unit. MCS notes they can reduce performance.
  • Keep vents and grilles unobstructed.
  • Clean or replace any filters your manual says are user-serviceable. Daikin suggests checking accessible filters every 1–3 months.
  • Check the system pressure gauge if your installer showed you how, and note any warnings on the controller.

Don’t

  • Open the outdoor unit or touch any refrigerant pipework or connections.
  • Attempt electrical work or remove internal covers.
  • Pressure-wash the outdoor coil, which can damage the fins.
  • Build enclosures or plant hedges close to the unit without checking the clearances in the manual.

DIY work can void a warranty. Daikin warns that DIY attempts can invalidate warranties, damage the system or create safety hazards. Leave refrigerant, electrical and internal work to qualified engineers.

How Long Does a Heat Pump Last?

MCS says an air source heat pump lasts up to 20 years on average. Like any heating system, how long yours lasts depends on how well it was designed, installed and looked after.

Correct sizing

A heat pump sized from a proper heat-loss calculation is less likely to cycle on and off excessively. See what size heat pump you need.

Regular servicing

Annual checks can catch leaks, blocked filters and failing components before they cause a breakdown.

Good siting

An outdoor unit with clear airflow and drainage, away from debris traps, has an easier working life.

Signs Your Heat Pump Needs Attention Before Its Next Service

  • Rooms are taking much longer to warm up than they used to.
  • Electricity use has risen noticeably without a change in weather or habits.
  • The controller shows an error code or warning.
  • The outdoor unit is unusually noisy, or ice builds up and does not clear.
  • System pressure keeps dropping.

Heat pump servicing FAQs

Does a heat pump need servicing every year?

Annual servicing is the usual recommendation, and MCS advises a yearly check-up. Some manufacturer guarantees require it, so check your own guarantee terms.

How much does an air source heat pump service cost?

Daikin UK puts a typical service at £150 to £300. Octopus charges £275 including VAT for an annual service on its free Standard Cover. Installers set their own prices, so ask for a quote and what it includes.

Who can service my heat pump?

Your original installer or the manufacturer’s service network are the simplest options. Otherwise, use an engineer trained on your make of heat pump. Check your guarantee terms first, because some require a particular type of engineer.

Will skipping a service void my warranty?

It can. Vaillant’s terms, for example, say its heat pump guarantee becomes invalid if the heat pump has not been serviced annually. Other manufacturers set their own conditions.

Is a heat pump service plan worth it?

It depends on what is included. Compare the plan’s yearly cost with the price of a one-off service, and check whether call-outs, parts and labour for repairs are covered or charged separately.

How long do air source heat pumps last?

MCS says an air source heat pump lasts up to 20 years on average. Correct sizing, good installation, sensible siting and regular servicing all help.
