How to Choose a Portable Air Conditioner
A portable air conditioner is quite different from a fan or an evaporative air cooler. A true portable AC uses a compressor and refrigerant to remove heat from the room, then sends that heat outside through an exhaust hose.

1. Match BTU output to the room
BTU describes cooling capacity. As a general principle, larger rooms need more cooling output.
But bigger is not automatically better. An oversized machine can cost more, take up more floor space and use more electricity than necessary.
- Small bedrooms/offices: around 7,000–8,000 BTU may be sufficient.
- Typical medium rooms: around 9,000–10,000 BTU is common.
- Larger rooms: 12,000 BTU or more may be more appropriate.
These are only broad guidelines. A sunny south-facing room with large windows can need more cooling than a shaded room of exactly the same floor area.
2. Look at the exhaust setup before buying
Every conventional single-hose portable air conditioner in this guide needs to exhaust hot air outside.
A poorly sealed open window allows warm outdoor air back into the room and can reduce cooling performance significantly.
Before buying, check:
- What type of windows you have
- Whether a suitable sealing kit is included
- How far the unit will sit from the window

3. Do not trust the word “silent” too literally
Portable compressor air conditioners contain both a fan and a compressor in the room with you. They are therefore considerably noisier than most ordinary fans and generally noisier than fixed split air conditioning.
Manufacturers also quote noise measurements differently. Some figures are sound pressure, while others are sound power, so comparing two headline dB numbers is not always an apples-to-apples comparison.

Wi-Fi might initially sound unnecessary on an air conditioner, but remote control can be particularly useful because portable AC works best when you can cool the room before it becomes unbearably hot.

How Much Does a Portable Air Conditioner Cost to Run?
Running cost depends primarily on the unit’s electrical consumption, your electricity tariff and how often the compressor needs to run.
From 1 July to 30 September 2026, Ofgem’s average electricity price-cap unit rate for a standard-variable Direct Debit tariff is 26.11p/kWh.
Example
If a portable air conditioner draws 900W continuously for one hour, that is 0.9kWh of electricity.
0.9 × 26.11p = approximately 23.5p per hour.
That does not mean a 900W-rated machine will always cost exactly 23.5p every hour. The compressor can cycle on and off once the target temperature is approached, and your own tariff may be higher or lower than the Ofgem average.
A larger machine can also sometimes cool a suitable room faster, so comparing rated wattage alone does not tell you which model will cost least over an entire evening.
